Representatives of Employers' Group of the EESC active in external relations met with European Commissioner Kristalina Georgieva
The President of the Employers' Group of the EESC, Mr. Henri Malosse, the vice president of BCCI Mr.Georgi Stoev, held a working breakfast meeting within Employers' Group members active in external relations and Ms Kristalina Georgieva, European Commissioner responsible for international cooperation, humanitarian aid and crisis response. The aim of the discussion was the strengthening of the cooperation between European businesses and EU international cooperation, humanitarian aid and crisis response services and programmes.
It was proposed to establish a link between the Employers' Group initiative on "Ethics" and the EU initiatives in the field and initiate a project of a Communication Platform between private sector and the Humanitarian Aid department of the European Commission (ECHO).
There is much to be done to better match business innovation and creativity with new demands for humanitarian aids and urgent responses to more complex conflicts and sudden crises outbreaks in the EU and throughout the world.
Potential input from business could focus, for instance, on disaster preparedness, including in developed industrialized countries and better specification and standardization of civil protection measures. Further, the participants discussed the possibilities to better promote European values and the visibility of EU public and private interventions in humanitarian aid and crises responses while respecting the EU consensus on three core principles: neutrality, impartiality and independence.
Improved transparency, communication and information on EU interventions should enhance the image and visibility of such European initiatives.
Contrary to the US, the EU has made a conscious choice to keep humanitarian aid and action out of politics.
Commissioner Georgieva closed this constructive discussion by inviting the EESC to participate in the forthcoming event celebrating the 20th anniversary of ECHO in 2012.
