Education remains universally recognized element for Europe’s recovery and growth
“Erasmus for All” or for some?
“Chambers still don’t believe that sufficient importance is attached to Vocational Education and Training. European academic institutes continue to receive funds, but we don’t see the equivalent in the VET environment. And where are the structures that are required by companies to increase the Europe-wide mobility of apprentices? Such structures might work nationally, but we need them at European level. Otherwise, Erasmus will remain for some and not for all”, said Arnaldo Abruzzini, Secretary General of EUROCHAMBRES, commenting on the proposals made by the European Commission on 23rd November for the 2014-2020 educational programme “Erasmus for All”.
BCCI supports the position of the Secretary General of EUROCHAMBRES, Arnaldo Abruzzini with regard to the new measures for amendment of the educational programme “Erasmus for All” 2012-2020. As the Chamber has on multiple occasions emphasized in its statements, investment in education and training is the best investment we can make for the future of Europe. The business needs vocational education of high quality and the efforts of EU administration need to be focused towards the improvement of these educational services. Pouring funds into various academic institutes without a purpose is meaningless, especially without a prior evaluation of the business’s needs.
The Chamber welcomes the idea to simplify the procedures and unite all existing programmes. This will not only facilitate the administration, because only one agency from each country will participate, but will also ease applicants. BCCI supports the rationalization of the multiple previous educational initiatives, which the new programme “Erasmus for All” will guarantee. However, there is still a threat from the purely formal side of such restructuring, which will reduce the administrative burden, but remains without a strategy focused on preparation of employees entering the labour market.
“Erasmus for All” is of course just one piece in the large and hugely complex Multiannual Financial Framework proposal of the Commission for the post 2014 EU Budget. Nonetheless, education remains universally recognized as a vital element for Europe’s recovery and growth, which cannot and must not be underestimated.
Therefore, BCCI reckons that the position of EUROCHAMBRES adequately reflects the aspiration of member-chambers for real modernization of the education and training systems, and encouragement of investments, entrepreneurship and suitability for employment.
