On 7 June 2011 at the congress center in Brdo near Kranj, a Bulgarian – Slovenian Business Forum was held. The forum was part of the programme of the official visit of President Georgi Parvanov in the Republic of Slovenia.
The Bulgarian Chamber of Commerce and Industry, the Chamber of Commerce and Industry of Slovenia and the offices of Enterprise Europe Network with the two organizations, ensured the participation of over 80 representatives of Bulgarian and Slovenian companies. The President of the Chamber of Commerce and Industry of Slovenia, Mr. Samo Hribar Milic and Mr. Alexander Kashukeev, member of the Management Board of BCCI who led the Bulgarian business delegation, exchanged ideas for cooperation both on business organizations level and between entrepreneurs.

Mr. Kashukeev said there is good cooperation between the Bulgarian and Slovenian business circles. The geographic, linguistic and cultural proximity help and facilitate business contacts. According to him, we should continue to seek bold solutions for mutual economic cooperation.
It is a general opinion that as EU partners and participants on the common market, Bulgaria and Slovenia have huge chances for joint business with good results.
In his speech, the President of Slovenia Dr. Danilo Türk said that his country has overcome to a certain extent the serious consequences of the crisis and is now optimistic about its economic development. He advised the business to direct its attention to the region outlined by the three seas – the Adriatic, Black and Mediterranean seas. Slovenia participates actively in the preparation of the South Stream project.
President Türk pointed out that “we must be pragmatic in order to have successful projects and must also achieve greater involvement of SMEs in them”. He said that his country is experienced in the following areas: special technologies for construction, agriculture, pharmacy, IT, etc. According to him we should find schemes for effective partnership for EU funds absorption.

The President of Bulgaria Georgi Parvanov defined as positive the tendency in the bilateral economic relations. In the next several months trade turnover is expected to reach its pre-crisis levels. Export of Bulgarian goods to Slovenia in 2010 as compared to 2009 grew by 137%. We have many examples of good investments, the Bulgarian President said – New Ljubljana Bank, Mercator, Krka, etc. In the period 2000 – 2010 Slovenian investments in Bulgaria amounted to EUR 164 million. According to him, there are conditions and prerequisites for a more dynamic and rapid development of the economic relations. Despite the internal problems the two countries face, as far as foreign relations are concerned they are stable and predictable.

The two Presidents had informal talks with the entrepreneurs, thus receiving feedback from the business. The Deputy Minister of Economy, Energy and Trade, Delyan Dobrev presented facts about Bulgarian economy and investment climate.

Thanks to Enterprise Europe Network over 50 bilateral meetings were held after the official part of the forum with great interest by both parties.
A representative of GS1 Bulgaria also took part in the Bulgarian business delegation and had a very useful meeting with her GS1 Slovenia partners. During the talks, the Slovenian colleagues shared their experience gained while working on a project related to the Global Data Synchronization Network (GDSN), and exchanged useful ideas about activities in the other areas of the GS1 standards.
