Visit of representatives of the Association of Italian entrepreneurs CONFINDUSTRIA

Representatives of the Association of Italian entrepreneurs Confindustria – Mario Pensa and Roberto Mascali, Director Confindustria Bulgaria, visited the BCCI and discussed with the President of the Chamber Tsvetan Simeonov the implementation of the system of food labeling in the UK.

Italian Federation of the Food and Drink Industry associated to Confindustria, has raised the issue on the applied in the UK labeling system “traffic light” for colour-coded labels on food products, whereby they are classified by the contents of salt, sugar and fats.

The “traffic light” system has been applied into all large chains in the UK, without being mandatory, but manufacturers need to use it in order to exist on the UK market.
This topic has been discussed at EU level since December 2013, first initiated by Italy which claimed violation of the European Regulations on Labeling. The position of the Italian side affirms that marks implemented by the UK, albeit for its own market, may have a negative impact on the European market as a whole and on the export of some member states. Italy is expecting that the marks in question will particularly affect the exported by tradition Italian food products, such as frozen pizza, pasta, sauces etc., which are sold on the UK market. Currently, reservations concerning the system implemented by the UK were expressed by 18 EU member states, including Bulgaria.

The Bulgarian Chamber of Commerce and Industry will render due assistance to engage the relevant Bulgarian authorities to this subject.
