General Assembly of the Association of Balkan Chambers in Athens
A General Assembly of the Association of Balkan Chambers (ABC) was held in Athens. Under the Organization’s rotating presidency, the President of the Union of Hellenic Chambers of Commerce (UHCC) Konstantinos Mihalos opened the forum. The meeting was also attended by Mr. Anastasios Liaskos, General Secretary of Tourism, Ministry of Tourism, Hellenic Republic. Presidents and representatives of the Chambers of Commerce of Albania, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Bulgaria, Cyprus, Macedonia, Serbia, Romania, Turkey and Montenegro took part in the event. The Bulgarian Chamber of Commerce and Industry was represented by its Secretary-General Vassil Todorov.
The first of this year General Assembly of ABC focused on the regional opportunities for cooperation in the field of tourism. The participants shared their ideas for implementing new tourist products – innovative, generic and alternative.
From Bulgarian side, presentation on wine tourism on the Balkans was made by Eng. Galina Niforou – Chair of the Bulgarian Wine Export Association (BWEA), and Managing Director of the Balkan International Wine Competition (BIWC). The BIWC Wine Festival has been organized for several years so far in Bulgaria, and this year it will take place from 5th to 8th June 2014, in Sofia.
The General Assembly ended with a summary of the most important trends in the tourism industry. Presentations of the chambers laid to the conclusions of recognizing the significance of tourism in the formation of the GDP of the Balkan countries. Governments’ assistance and political stability were also stressed as main factors for the development of tourism.
ABC Chambers committed themselves to contribute to the promotion of existing tourist products on the market and to assist tourist companies in the preparation of new service packages, including opportunities to visit various sites in the neighboring countries.
Association of Balkan Chambers (АВС) was established on the initiative of the BCCI in 1994. Members of the ABC are the chambers of Albania, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Bulgaria, Greece, Cyprus, Macedonia, Romania, Serbia, Montenegro, and Turkey. The Association promotes the interests of more than 2 million companies from the Balkan countries.
Members of the Association cooperate in the following areas:
•Supporting trade liberalization on the Balkans;
•Specific proposals to the Governments of the Balkan countries on facilitating the existing administrative and non-tariff restrictions as well as any other procedures related to the implementation of transactions and payments between the countries;
•Supporting bilateral and multilateral relations between the companies in this region.
