New market opportunities for Bulgarian products in South Africa
“We need to find new markets for Bulgarian products in African countries”, the Regional representative of BCCI in South Africa, Mr. Raycho Iliev announced in a letter addressed to the President of the Bulgarian Chamber of Commerce and Industry, Mr. Tsvetan Simeonov.
A study of the business opportunities in Zambia carried out by Mr. Iliev, shows that the country has entered the “Everything but Arms” initiative of the European Union under which all imports to the EU from the least developed countries are duty free and quota free, with the exception of armaments. The Zambian government actively seeks foreign investments through the Zambian Development Agency (ZDA), which was established in 2007 to consolidate a number of trade and investment promotion initiatives. The country has implemented a comprehensive trade reform programme in the context of a broader liberalization package, which includes a significant reduction in import duties and other charges, the elimination of quantity restrictions and export taxes, the introduction of a market-determined exchange rate and export incentives. As a result of these reforms and using the trade restrictiveness index of the IMF, Zambia has one of the most liberal trade regimes in Africa.
Zambia has an estimated population of 12 Million. The government of the country is multiparty democracy with Members of Parliament and President, who is also Head of State elected for five years. There is a stable legal environment governed by the rule of law. The country’s economy has historically been based on the copper mining industry. However, the Zambian government understands the need of economic diversification in order to reduce the country’s reliance on the copper industry and tries to exploit other components of Zambia’s rich resource base by promoting agriculture, tourism, gemstone mining and hydropower production.
Bulgaria was invited to participate in the International Trade Fair – Lusaka next year by Mrs. Prisca Chikwashi – CEO of Zambia Association of Chambers of Commerce and Industry.
Mr. Raycho Iliev was informed that sugar exports to European markets may rise to more than 430 000 tons a year. During meetings at the Ministry of Agriculture and Cooperatives, it became clear that the country subsidises small farmers with 180 000 tons of fertilizers, supplied by tenders, and is interested in agricultural equipment, irrigation systems and training.
