Ukrainian Goods May Enter the European Market through Bulgaria

 The new Ambassador of Ukraine to Bulgaria H.Ex. Mykola Baltazhi met with the President of the Bulgarian Chamber of Commerce and Industry Mr. Tsvetan Simeonov. The First Secretary of the Embassy of Ukraine in Sofia, Alexandr Guriev also took part in the meeting.
 
The Ambassador was informed of the services BCCI provides to business. Mr. Tsvetan Simeonov presented data about the current economic development of the country and provided information about the 265 companies with Ukrainian capital registered at BCCI.
 
Ambassador Baltazhi said that Ukraine is undergoing an economic reform and last year had 4% growth. The country aims to attract foreign investors. There are Bulgarian companies which invested in Ukraine, for example in a processing plant for quartz sand for the glass production, in industry, etc. According to the Ambassador, however, the examples for such investment cooperation should be more. He believes there are opportunities in the field of energy production, agriculture, tourism. A change of legislation is being discussed, to allow purchasing land in Ukraine, which at the moment can only be rented.
Ukrainian goods can enter the EU market through Bulgaria, and Bulgarian goods may be presented in Ukraine, which has a really large market. At the moment, negotiations with the EU are taking place for an EU-Ukraine Association Agreement and a Free Trade Agreement. By the end of 2011, Ukraine expects them to be finalized. These negotiations will also affect Ukraine’s relations with the Customs Union between Russia, Belarus and Kazakhstan. 
Mr. Simeonov said that BCCI supports Ukraine’s efforts to become an associated member of the EU and urges the Bulgarian state institutions to support these efforts as well.
 
The question of liberalizing the visa regime for Ukrainian tourists willing to visit our country was discussed. Besides, Ambassador Baltazhi said that the upcoming 2012 European Football Championship which will take place in Ukraine and Poland, will attract more tourists to the country. This also holds potential for improving the business climate and relations between the two countries.
 
The extremely successful cooperation between the BCCI, the Ukrainian Chamber of Commerce and Industry and the First Secretary of the Ukrainian Embassy in Sofia, Mr. Guriev was underlined. A visit of Ukrainian companies to Sofia at the end of the year is expected and BCCI undertook to organize a business forum and arrange meetings with local businessmen.
