The Best Balkan Wine for 2013 is Macedonian





 

The second edition of the Balkan Wine Competition and Festival (BIWC) 2013 was held from 16 to 19 May 2013 in Grand Hotel Sofia, Bulgaria. Galina Niforou, BIWC Director and BCCI President Tsvetan Simeonov officially opened the festival.
 
Approximately 400 wines from the Balkans competed in 5 categories. The international jury assessed using the Australian system wines from about 11 Balkan countries. The Jury was chaired by Konstantinos Lazarakis MW, the only holder of the title Master of Wine in the Balkans.
 
The BIWC 2013 Grand Prize went to the Macedonian wine Château Kamnik 2010 Merlot Single Vineyard Reserve.
 
36 gold medals were awarded by the international jury. Bulgaria was awarded 16 gold medals Greece - 6, Macedonia - 5 Hungary – 3, Croatia – 2, Montenegro – 2, Serbia – 1, Turkey - 1.
 
In the category "sparkling wine" the award was given to Single Vineyard Brut 2007 Edoardo Miroglio, Bulgaria. The award was presented by BCCI’s President Tsvetan Simeonov.
 
In the other categories the wines that were awarded were as follows:
 
• White wine: Techni Alipias (Sauvignon Blanc & Assyrtiko) 2012, Wine Art Estate, Greece;
 
• Rose: Le Photographe Rose (Grenache & Cabernet Sauvignon) 2012, Minkov Brothers, Bulgaria;
 
• Red wine: Merlot Single Vineyard Reserva 2010, Château Kamnik, Macedonia;
 
• Dessert Wine: Disznókő Tokaji Aszú 5 puttonyos 2007, Disznókő Estate, Hungary.
