GS1 Bulgaria marked the 40th anniversary of the first barcode scan
At a regular meeting of the Members of GS1 Bulgaria Council with the BCCI, which was held on 26th June 2014, the 40th anniversary of the first barcode scan in the world was marked.
At first, intended to speed-up and improve the cashier customer service in the commercial properties, nowadays barcodes are the basis of many business processes and they are used in different industries, such as retail, manufacturing, logistics, healthcare, finance and banking, e-government and others.
40 years after the first product was scanned with a GS1 barcode, GS1 continues to expand the scope of the barcode standards involving companies that are directly interested in standardization. In order to be closer to consumers 111 national regional organisations have been created, as spirit of innovation is leading for the GS1 community.
In order to increase transparency and promote fair competition BCCI developed and launched this April a mobile application for verification of barcodes legitimacy. Mobile application “BG Barcode” is available in web stores and provides free information to consumers, who activate it in their mobile phones.
