Meeting of the Bulgaria – Turkmenistan Bilateral Trade Group




On 13 October 2011 a meeting of the Bulgaria – Turkmenistan Bilateral Trade Group, with the participation of a representative of the Bulgarian Chamber of Commerce and Industry, was held. The meeting was organized in pursuance of the recommendations of the minutes of the first session of the Intergovernmental Bulgarian – Turkmen Commission on Economic Cooperation, which took place in March this year, in Sofia.
Representatives of ministries, sectorial organizations and companies from the two countries discussed issues of bilateral trade promotion.

It was explained that 70% of state property in Turkmenistan will be gradually privatized. The advantages of the country are its various mineral resources and its location on key transport transit corridor. Turkmenistan has adopted a policy of neutrality and the global economic crisis has had little impact on the economic development of the country.
During the talks, an exchange of business delegations between the chambers of commerce of the two countries was agreed, following the Cooperation Agreement signed by them in 2008. Furthermore, bilateral information on international fairs and exhibitions in Bulgaria and Turkmenistan in 2012 will be provided in order to encourage participation in them.

Bulgarian business is interested in exporting food products, beverages, ready-made clothes, and furniture to Turkmenistan; as well as in participating in local tenders and public procurement procedures for infrastructure construction, etc.; and cooperation in the field of tourism.

Turkmen business is interested in and has capacity to export fabrics and raw materials for the textile industry; export of carpets; cooperation in the field of transport and tourism, investments in the country. At the moment Tourist zone Avaza is being constructed on the shore of the Caspian Sea and Bulgarian companies can also take part in the process.
