Waste management is too difficult for companies from the formal sector of economy
The President of BCCI Tsvetan Simeonov opened an international conference on theme “Working towards a sustainable waste management system”. He welcomed the partners and participants on behalf of the 52 000 companies – members of the Chamber, more than 100 sectorial organizations and 28 regional chambers of commerce united in the system of the Bulgarian chambers of commerce and industry.
The waste issue is crucial to our future and BCCI supports this position like many other responsible organizations and institutions worldwide. Unfortunately, Bulgaria still occupies mid-positions in rankings of waste utilization, collection and acquaintance of the institutions and companies with the magnitude of the problem. The complicated legal framework regarding waste management, forces companies from the formal sector of economy to pay for waste management almost as much resources as needed for the efficient collection and processing of industrial and household wastes. Our country needs to work at greater speed to catch up in this sphere. According to reports, companies are well-informed to a large extent, and that is why we are glad to implement the WasteKit project in cooperation with clusters from other countries, which have more experience in the application of modern waste treatment technologies. Not surprisingly, BCCI supports Sofia Municipality for the exchange of experience in this area, because half of the country’s GDP is produced here, which in the current conditions means that the respective quantities of industrial and household wastes are produced in the municipality.
Despite the complex legislative framework regulating waste management, the requirements for construction and biodegradable wastes have not come in force yet, it became clear in the course of discussions.
The conference is held today and tomorrow in Sofia and is organized by BCCI, the Bulgarian Academy of Science, Sofia Municipality, with the participation of partners from the Netherlands, Great Britain and Italy. The event is funded by WasteKit Project through the 7th EU Framework Programme.
The two-day event aims at exchanging information and sharing good practices in the field of waste management, management policies and actions taken in the various areas, such as legislation, wastes and management technologies, public attitudes, etc.
Await additional information about the ideas shared and discussed during the Conference.
